Cleaning Women’s fifth album Washer will be released in early October, the album’s first single 1984 out now.

The band’s second album Aelita will be released for the first time on vinyl and digitally in June.

⚫️ Cleaning Women, the band known for their self-made Instruments, androgynous image, and including interdisciplinary arts in their live performances, are back with a new single called 1984 from their upcoming fifth album Washer out on October 3rd, 2025, via Svart Records. Cleaning Women wings the new single:
”The songs for the new album have been in the works for years, but 1984 came together very intuitively in two days at the very end of the sessions just before going into the studio. The verse and chorus were written in the evening, the power riff in the end the next morning. A special pulse was given by the metal platters found at a recycling centre. Nowadays they also serve as a part of the sound on Cleaning Women’s gigs. The song title magically appeared on the filename of the song’s first demo version, and it seemed to fit the mood of the verses. The upcoming album features somewhat untraditional instrumentation on several tracks, but this song still represents a fairly traditional Cleaning Women sound. All the instruments are still self-constructed.”

In preparation for the album release tour, Cleaning Women will accompany silent films in Wiesbaden, Germany and at the Tromsø Silent Film Days this April. The band’s sophomore album Aelita is reissued for the first time on vinyl and released digitally by Svart Records this summer, and it will be celebrated with at least one special show at Semifinal in Helsinki on 4th of July. The following day you can catch the band at Mitäs Mitäs Mitäs festival in Urjala, Finland. The dates for the record release tour will be announced later.

Cleaning Women’s debut album Pulsator reissued on vinyl for the first time ever

Svart Records is proud to bring Cleaning Women’s Pulsator back on the market for the first time on wax in February 2025. The vinyl edition of this classic album is long overdue. To be precise, it’s overdue for almost a quarter of a century. -”For copyright reasons the availability of Pulsator has been very limited to this day and the album hasn’t seen a digital nor vinyl release before, so we’re absolutely thrilled to finally right the wrongs for our soon to be 24-year old debut album with the help of Svart Records”, comments the band.

Cleaning Women was founded in Finland back in 1996. The band is known for their self-made instruments, androgynous image, and including interdisciplinary arts in their live performances. Cleaning Women is an experimental group consisting of three cleaning robots (CW01, CW03 and CW04). Besides their unique music, Cleaning Women is known for their alternative ways in choosing their instruments. The origin of their acoustic sound can be traced to self-made and self-customized instruments, which are crafted from mangled household items or material salvaged from trash bins.

But what it is that makes them really special is the way they sound. Even though the starting point is avant-gardish and experimental, the end result is jaw-dropping combination of skilled musicianship, original soundscapes and easily accessible, even danceable music – a combination of cinematic sci-fi western and sparkling trash can disco.

The 2001 debut album Pulsator already had the band’s high standards to use only self-made instruments in the studio as well as performing live. The universe of sound heard on Pulsator consists of mic’d and tuned up clothes racks, strings set up on the hanger rods of wardrobes, a wine fermentation vessel, jars, buckets and other scrap material, bizarre vocal parts with partially made-up languages, and a scat-solo by legendary Finnish artist M.A. Numminen.

-“After performing live for some years we were asked to record an album. There were no examples, references or goals set from the outside for the album, so we had the absolute freedom to do whatever we wanted with it. Looking back now, you can see it both as the strength and weakness of it, but an album is always the zeitgeist of the times. It documented well the mindscape, energy, and sound image of the band and we still play most of those tracks live”, comments Cleaning Women from planet Clinus.

The reissue of Pulsator is set to release on February 21st, 2025 on a limited vinyl pressing of 300 copies including a Svart exclusive amber vinyl, limited black vinyl, and limited pink vinyl only available from the band.

During their over 20 years of existence (founded in 1996, the same line-up since 1999), the group has played over 600 concerts in over 20 countries in 3 continents, released 4 albums, and composed and performed umpteen live soundtracks for silent film classics and rarities, such as My Grandmother, The Seashell and the Clergyman, Metropolis or Aelita - Queen of Mars. All this to enthusiastic audiences around the globe. Cleaning Women has also made music scores for contemporary films, the latest being Alice Rohrwacher’s 40-minute film The Pupils (Le Pupille) (2022).





Silent Movies


Cleaning Women also performs musical accompaniments to old classic Soviet-era silent movies. Their second studio album "Aelita - the Queen of Mars" was even named after director Yakov Protazanov's old sci-fi classic.
